The government will impose an all-out lockdown for one week across the country from April 14 as coronavirus infection has increased. State Minister for Public Administration Forhad Hossain said this to journalists on Friday noon.

Earlier Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said the government can impose an all-out lockdown for one week across the country from April 14.

Quader, also the general secretary of the ruling Awami League, made the announcement while talking to reporters during a daily brief at his official residence in Dhaka on Friday.

The minister also said the government had been considering tougher restrictions to safeguard people from the coronavirus disease as the ongoing restrictions were not being followed properly.

Lockdown News Bangladesh 2021:

The country is already under a week-long lockdown since Monday, aimed at curbing the sharp rise of Covid-19 deaths and infections as the country is going through the second wave of the pandemic.

The government issued an 11-point directive restricting public movement across the country for the lockdown, effective from April  5 to 11.

On Thursday, Bangladesh recorded the highest number of single-day Covid-19 deaths, with 74 people dying of the deadly disease in 24 hours. With the latest figure, the number of total fatalities rose to 9,521 till Thursday morning.

On Wednesday, the country logged the highest ever number of new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours – 7, 626. The total number of cases as of Thursday morning stands at 666,000.

However, shopping malls and markets have been reopened in Dhaka amid the lockdown, in face of protests from shop owners and employees, and public transport has been reinstated in limited capacity following demands from office goers.
