The life of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Mecca was very difficult and it was very difficult to endure in this condition.
And that is why there was no opportunity at all to celebrate and observed social activities. When our beloved Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, the first opportunity to establish a sense of social freedom for Muslims came. At that time, in the second year of Hijri, Allah the Almighty, through His Messenger (peace be upon him), advised the Muslims to observe the national festival. Hazrat Anas (RA) has described a hadith.
He said that when the Prophet (peace be upon him) migrated to Medina, the people there celebrate holding two festivals of joy every year. And at that festival, they used to play games and have done fun. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked, ‘What is the importance of these two days?’ They replied, “We used to play and have fun in these two days in the age of barbarism.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, ‘Allaah has inaugurated two better days instead of these two to celebrate your joy.’
One is Eid-ul-Fitr and the other is Eid-ul-Azha or the day of animal sacrifice on the day. (Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith: 1134, Musnad Ahmad, Hadith: 13622 Al-Musdatrek Alas Sahihain, Hadith: 1091.
